I like to think of Windows not as an operating system, but as a jack of all trades. Once Windows is up and running on your machine, it must cover all your needs. That is why Microsoft fits it with as many tools as possible. Most of them are pretty basic, but that’s not the point. The point is that you can do just about anything on Windows once it’s up and running.

The thing is that there are Windows components that you will never use, so there is no point installing them. So how do you remove them? With the help of the nLite freeware application, you can create a customized Windows installation disk, one that does not have the components you will never use.

nLite has a download size of just 2.5MB. Such a lightweight download will complete in no time at all, even on a less spectacular Internet connection. Once the download completes, follow the instructions presented by the setup wizard to have nLite up and running. You will be asked to choose between multiple languages, between a full, compact or custom installation, and if you want a desktop shortcut.

Using nLite is not complicated at all; you just have to follow the instructions presented by a wizard. When you launch the application, a wizard will guide your through the process of building a custom Windows installation. Please note that nLite provides support for Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003. After you select the Windows installation, nLite presents you with options to remove various components, to integrate hotfixes, add-ons and updated packs, to create a bootable ISO, and other options. Once you’re done with your selection, let nLite do its job and create a customized Windows installation for you.

I don’t know if you have noticed it, but I mentioned above that nLite is freeware. This means that you can take advantage of the functionality it has to offer without spending your hard earned money.

With the free and very easy to use nLite tool, you will be able to come up with a customized Windows installation, one that doesn’t have the components you don’t need.

Pros

A wizard takes you through the installation process and another wizard guides you through the steps you need to take to use nLite. You can thus easily remove components and configure a Windows installation that suits your needs. And to top it all off, nLite is freeware.

Cons

It supports Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003. Windows XP was an incredibly popular operating system, but it’s more than a decade old now.
